The engraved t.p., by Reinier van Persijn, depicts five eminent anatomists dissecting a corpse: Johann Vesling, Jean Riolan, A. Valcob, Guy Patin & Albert Kyper. On the left of a cupboard of surgical instruments stands Asklepios, god of healing, dressed as a scholar and accompanied by his symbolic wand and the animals associated with him. (i.e. crane, eagle, owl, cock, dog and griffin). On the left stands Medicina with the rod and serpent and a cock. The title page was used for other later works, including Olof Rudbeck's Messis aurea (Heidelberg, 1659).
